When we say Hong Kong, the top of mind tourist destination and activity is Disneyland, shopping and food trip. However, did you know that Hong Kong has more to offer?

I found out about an island after booking a trip but realized I don’t wanna spend on shopping and food again, so I searched their tourism board site on what to do in the island😁 Here’s the link if you’re interested https://www.discoverhongkong.com

Located off it’s coast is Peng Chau Island, a serene and picturesque destination that offers something for everyone, regardless of age. So I thought, I will have a great time in this quaint island, and I wasn’t disappointed. This charming island, known as “flat island” due to its low elevation, is a haven for those seeking tranquility, cultural experiences, and outdoor adventures.

Whether you’re a family with young children, a couple looking for a romantic getaway, or a solo traveler seeking adventure just like me, Peng Chau is an ideal place to explore.

Cultural and Historical Attractions

Peng Chau is steeped in history and culture, with several temples and historical sites that are must-visits for anyone interested in exploring the island’s rich heritage. Some of the temples are:

  • Tin Hau Temple: Built in 1792, this temple is dedicated to the Goddess of the Sea and is recognized as a Grade II historic building. It features a bronze bell from the 1700s and a stone tablet erected by local fishermen during the Qing dynasty.
  • Lung Mo Temple: This vibrant temple, dedicated to the Dragon Mother, is famous for its golden interior and the legend that touching the “dragon bed” can bring good luck and fertility.
  • Seven Sisters Temple: A unique cluster of temples and arches, this site is dedicated to seven Hakka girls who became sworn sisters. Couples often visit to pray for fertility.

I didn’t take photos inside these temples, it is something that I am not keen of, I prefer to have a quiet time a light an incense and offer.

Artistic Delights

Peng Chau is not just about history; it also boasts a thriving artistic scene! I was so amazed with the level of artistry in this island, my eyes were filled with beauty and delight! As a creative person, I was very alive, to see a lot of artworks, it gave me so much inspiration for my future projects. The must see areas and you shouldn’t miss are:

  • Fook Yuen Leather Factory Secret Garden: Once an industrial site, this former factory has been transformed into a colorful art space filled with graffiti and creative installations made from recycled materials. It’s a perfect spot for taking unique photos.
  • Pottery Workshops: The island was once famous for its pottery-making industry. Visitors can explore the remnants of this craft and even participate in workshops to learn about this traditional art form.

Beyond the Leather Factory, Peng Chau’s streets are dotted with street art and local murals, adding a splash of color and creativity to the island’s tranquil landscape. Visitors can stroll along Wing On Street to discover these hidden gems, which reflect the island’s laid-back yet vibrant community spirit.

For those who love the outdoors, Peng Chau offers a variety of activities to enjoy.

  • Hiking Trails: The island is home to several hiking trails, including the Peng Chau Family Trail that leads to the summit of Finger Hill, offering stunning views of Hong Kong’s skyline. The hike is relatively easy and suitable for families however on the day I visited the island, it was so hot and humid! The sun is scorching at 10am! I didn’t even walk halfway the trail, I gave up immediately! I felt burning and dehaydrated.
  • Peng Yu Path: This scenic path runs along the northern shore, providing breathtaking ocean views and access to secluded beaches where you can camp or simply relax.

Biking: Rent a bike and explore the island’s scenic routes, such as Peng Yu Path, which offers stunning views of Discovery Bay and Hong Kong Disneyland.
