Nestled in the heart of Calapan City, the capital of Oriental Mindoro, the Oriental Mindoro Heritage Museum stands as a testament to the province’s vibrant history, diverse culture, and rich traditions. For travelers like me, history enthusiasts, and locals alike, this museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the island’s past and the lives of its people.

The heritage museum is barely 3-years old and was inaugurated last November 15, 2021. The heritage museum, which was funded by the National Government through the General Appropriations Act of 2020, was built at the Old Provincial Capitol of Oriental Mindoro in Brgy. Ibaba East, Calapan City where the Cal-kuta, an abandoned Spanish fortress stands. With a combination of classic and modern designs, its features are inspired by the β€œMAHAL TANA” theme which highlights the iconic symbols of Oriental Mindoro – Mangyan, Halcon, Tamaraw and Naujan Lake.

A Treasure Trove of History and Culture

The Oriental Mindoro Heritage Museum houses a good collection of artifacts, photographs, and exhibits that showcase the province’s heritage. From pre-colonial relics to Spanish-era influences and contemporary cultural expressions, the museum provides a well-rounded narrative of Mindoro’s evolution. These are the highlights of the museum:

Ethnographic Exhibits– Discover the indigenous cultures of the Mangyan tribes, the original inhabitants of Mindoro. The museum displays traditional clothing, jewelry, and handicrafts, such as the famous Mangyan script (Hanunuo and Buhid) and intricately woven Iraya baskets. My personal favorite among the displays are the Ramit fabric, which are very colorful and unique in design. If you are not well knowledgeable about different local textiles you might think this is a woven fabric from the north or down south. This is my favorite display in the museum as I am into locally woven fabrics.

Archaeological Finds -Ancient pottery, tools, and burial artifacts reveal the island’s pre-colonial history, including trade relations with neighboring islands and early settlements. The collection is not vast nonetheless is provides me with a glimpse of the past, to set your expectations please do not compare with our National Museum collection, it is entirely of different level.

Spanish Colonial Influence – There are several collections to illustrate the impact of Spanish rule on Mindoro’s culture and society. Collections showcase the life of more affluent people during the colonial period, and these also reminded of some of the items my great, great grandparents have left to their families.

Natural History– Oriental Mindoro is home to diverse flora and fauna, and the museum features exhibits on the province’s unique biodiversity, including the Tamaraw a dwarf water Buffalo that is endemic in the province.

Why Visit the Oriental Mindoro Heritage Museum?

If you are planning to visit Mindoro in the future, I personally suggest that you drop by the museum. Since the museum is small they require guests to spend maximum of 45-minutes to look around. 45-minutes is will not eat much of your travel time so go ahead and visit them for these reasons:

  • For education experience which is perfect for students and researchers interested in Mindoro’s cultural and historical background.
  • For cultural appreciation and gain more understanding of the Mangyan heritage and the province’s identity.
  • To support local tourism so you can also contribute to the preservation and promotion of Oriental Mindoro’s heritage.

My Final Thoughts

The Oriental Mindoro Heritage Museum is more than just a repository of artifactsβ€”it’s a gateway to understanding the soul of the province. Whether you’re a history buff, a cultural explorer, or simply passing through Calapan, a visit to this museum is a rewarding experience that connects you with Mindoro’s past and present.

Here are some photos taken by my friend to inspire you to visit the place- and YES is it Instagrammable though my photos aren’t, cause I didn’t go with a photographer or simply I just can’t do the Instagram poses ha ha ha

I really like the exhibition design β€” it lets the exhibits stand out while giving the whole space a modern, inviting, and cutting-edge feel πŸ™‚ That said, from my (admittedly limited) experience, this kind of thoughtful design actually seems quite common in Filipino museums β€” which is definitely commendable!

Hi Sophie, glad to hear you like it as much as I do. I agree with you – modern museum highlights the exhibits, more inviting and is relatable especially for younger visitors. Yes, for most museums here in PH, the design and interiors modern, minimalist and spacious- which I love cause it offers a more open vibe to visitors especially the first timers. Our museum doesn’t give a feeling of intimidation ha ha…

If you happen to visit Philippines please include in your itinerary The Museum of National History here’s the link –https://www.nationalmuseum.gov.ph/our-museums/national-museum-of-natural-history/ .. Oh also you can contact me I can show you around Manila πŸ™‚
